“You can’t reach for what is in front of you until you let go of what’s behind you.”

One of the hardest lessons in life is letting go—whether it’s guilt, anger, love, or loss. Change is never easy, but letting go is oftentimes the healthiest path forward. It clears out toxic attachments from the past and paves the way to make the most positive use of the present.

I’m often reminded of the story of two monks on a pilgrimage. Along their journey they came to a river bank. As they were about to tread through the water they noticed a young woman dressed in her finery trying to cross but hesitating, not knowing what to do since she didn’t want to get her fine clothes wet. Without a second thought, the leader of the two monks lifted the woman and carried her on his back to the other side of the river where he put her down. The two monks proceeded along their way.

After an hour of walking in silence, the other monk feeling uneasy with what his fellow monk did began to express his concerns. “You know it’s against our commandment to touch a woman, let alone carry a woman. How could you do that? Doesn’t it bother you?”

The monk who carried the women continued to walking without saying a word until he finally responded, “I set her down by the river an hour ago. Why are you still carrying her?”

What are you still holding onto?

We’re always trying to fix ourselves as if we’re broken, but we can alter our lives by altering our attitude. To own your power you must let go of pressing the rewind button on the things that should have been deleted a long time ago.

Realize your greatness and be happy with where you are today, which helps you create a better tomorrow.
