“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

“Kindness is a language which the
deaf can hear and the blind can see.” ~Mark Twain

Can you recall a time some one was kind to you? Now change the scenario and think of a time that you were kind to another person? Move into your heart space and remember how their reaction to your kindness made you feel?

Being kindhearted is fundamental to human existence. It’s not something that demands hard work. It originates from the simple act of giving unconditionally with an open heart. Kindheartedness has many benefits. By improving relationships and connections with others, it ultimately boosts ones health and happiness.

Compassion and thoughtfulness are symbols of respect and correlate with enhanced mental, emotional, and physical well-being. In the 1990s, the late Dr. Masaru Emoto performed a series of experiments examining the natural effects of words on the crystalline structure of water. He noted that the vibrational frequency of kind and loving words when conveyed to the water formed a complete crystal structure, compared to energies of hateful and angry words where the structure became fragmented…

Emoto experimented with a dozen roses. He randomly put 6 roses in a glass vase with the words kind, love, joy, peace written on it. The other 6 roses were placed in a different vase on which he wrote hate, anger, guilt, worry. Within a few days, the roses in the second vase started wilting; whereas, the roses in the first vase were flourishing…Considering approximately 70% of our body is made up of water; kindness has a direct impact on our immediate health and well-being.

Peace will not arise from simply ending conflicts. It will happen when humanity raises its consciousness beyond that of fear and hatred. It’s no surprise unkind acts have a greater impression on us than acts of kindness.

Fred Rogers modeled the best in all of us and reminded everyone of the good and positive in life. At the root of all his lessons is one simple guiding principle – always be kind…“Be a good Neighbor.” He instructed each of us to conduct our lives in our own unique way and always in a way that works harmoniously alongside others; to be kind and treat others the way you’d like to be treated.

Every time we honor our own struggle and the struggles of others by responding with empathy and compassion, the healing that results is felt by all. Let’s all do a little bit of good. Those bits of kindness combined together nurture our world.

“My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” ~ Dalai Lama
