“The secret to living is giving.” ~ Tony Robbins
Many of us look for happiness by trying to create it. We scramble around seeking and searching…yet it doesn’t always display itself in the form we seek. Sometimes, all we need to do is to look outside ourselves. We often find happiness by giving to others—extending a helping hand, a smile, or even a hug—and by doing so, we automatically receive joy within.
At a seminar of 50 attendees, the speaker gave each person a balloon and told them to write their name on it using a marking pen. Then, all the balloons were collected and put in another room.
The participants were later let into the room and asked to find the balloon with their name on it within five minutes. Everyone frantically searched for their name, pushing the balloons around and colliding with each other. There was utter chaos.
At the end of five minutes, no one had found their balloon. Then, each person was asked to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it…Within minutes, everyone had their own balloon.
How often do we get caught up in the search without genuinely appreciating the joy around us? The intention of the activity was to help us realize that our happiness also lies in the happiness of others. Giving is more than an exchange of physical gifts or time. It’s a shift in our consciousness that affects not just the receiver but you, the giver, by making you happier. Giving is receiving…fostering greater connectivity, and more.
“Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you left open.” ~ John Barrymore
