Ubuntu Story – An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He placed a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that whoever arrived first would win the sweet fruits. When he told them to run, they all took each other’s hands and ran together, then sat down together to enjoy their treats.
When the anthropologist asked them why they had run as one, when they could have had all the fruits for themselves by running individually, they replied: ‘Ubuntu.’ Ubuntu in the Xhosa culture translates to “humanity to others” or “I am who I am because of who we all are.”
By traveling together in unity and sharing common values and a sense of community, we can reach our destination more easily. Having a community-oriented worldview can be mutually beneficial.
By serving others, you are serving yourself.
We must all challenge our own beliefs and share a mutual understanding of humanity, so that we can build a better world.
John Lennon said it beautifully in his song Imagine…
“Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one.”
