Pablo Picasso is among the most renowned artists worldwide, and as the story below shows, he may still inspire us to appreciate ourselves more deeply.
Once, when Picasso was walking down a street in Paris, a woman approached him, praised his work, and asked whether he would consider drawing her portrait. She added that she would pay him for the portrait.
Picasso agreed, sat the woman down on the sidewalk, pulled out a sketchbook and a pencil, and began to draw her. Others recognized the famous Picasso, and a crowd of onlookers soon gathered to watch him at work.
After about five minutes, Picasso finished his drawing, handed it to the woman he had sketched, and said, “Here it is. That will be five thousand francs.”
Taken aback by the price, the woman objected, saying, “But Mr. Picasso, it took you only a few minutes.” Picasso smiled and replied, “No, my dear, you are mistaken; it took me a lifetime.“
The point is this: people see what you produce and perhaps how long it took you to create it, and then value your work accordingly. People do not see the hours, weeks, months, years, and possibly even a lifetime of effort you have put into mastering your skills to produce the result you deliver.
