How Will You Reinvent Yourself?

When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change…

A chef’s daughter complained to her dad that her life was hard and that she didn’t know how to get through her struggles. She often felt defeated and hopeless.

As a chef, the girl’s father took her into his kitchen and brought three equal-sized pots of water to a boil. He put potatoes in one pot, eggs in another, and ground coffee beans in the third, then left them to boil.

After twenty minutes, he turned off the burners, removed the potatoes from the pot, and placed them in a bowl. He did the same with the boiled eggs. Finally, he poured the coffee into a mug and asked his daughter, “What do you see?” She replied, “Potatoes, eggs, and coffee.”

Her father asked her to take a closer look at the potatoes and touch them. She did and noticed they were soft. He then asked her to break open an egg, and she acknowledged that it was hard-boiled. Finally, he asked her to sip the liquid made from boiled coffee beans. It was rich and delicious.

Her father explained that all three food items had faced the same hardship—twenty minutes in boiling water—yet each reacted differently.

The potato went into the water hard and firm, but it softened and weakened as it boiled. The egg was fragile when it entered the water, but its inside became firm and strong as it boiled.

Similarly, the ground coffee beans were transformed into something new and appreciated in different ways by many.

He asked his daughter, “When adversity comes, how do you respond? Do you become soft and weak, build strength, or change the situation?”

The Moral:

Life is full of ups and downs, shifting momentum, and adversity. Many of us would rather avoid these challenges, but they don’t have to affect us negatively. They can offer wisdom that leads to greater self-awareness, personal growth, and development. You choose how you respond. How will you create a new you?
