Labyrinth: A Metaphor of Life’s Journey…

“Man’s mind, stretched to a new idea, never goes back to its original dimension.”

~Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809 – 1894)

Inherent within the design of the labyrinth is its archetypical power, dating back some 4,000 years. It’s a sacred geometrical symbol that consists of a single winding pathway that leads from the entrance to the center and then back again. It is not a maze because there is only one path.

A labyrinth is in full view, which allows a person to be quiet and focus internally for personal, psychological, and spiritual transformation. Walking a labyrinth helps shift one’s awareness of self as its unique patterns are designed to inducing altered states of consciousness. It allows those who enter to experience other ways of seeing through guided internal thought and walking meditation.

Generally, there are three stages to the walk: (1) releasing and letting go on the way in; (2) receiving a greater sense of self in the center; and (3) returning with an inner awareness as you follow the path back out of the labyrinth. Symbolically and sometimes in truth, you are taking back out into the world that which you have received.

To prepare, you may want to quietly reflect before walking the labyrinth. Some people come with questions, while others just use the labyrinth to slow down and take time out from a busy life. There are some who come to find strength to take the next step; others walk the labyrinth during times of grief and loss. Whatever your reason is, you will find meaning and a purpose.

In a most basic sense, the labyrinth represents the spiritual journey—that of venturing to the center point (the place of power in your innermost being) and then returning to the world with a broader sense of who you are. Just as in hypnosis, the use of metaphors helps with one’s personal growth and change. The labyrinth is indeed a metaphor of life’s journey. Feel free to use it in any way that meets your needs. You may go directly to the center or pause along the way. Take your time to quiet the mind and then enjoy the journey.
