Ubuntu Story – An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that whoever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run, they all took each other’s hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats. When the anthropologist asked them why they had run like that as one could have had all the fruits for themselves, they said: Ubuntu. Ubuntu in the Xhosa culture translates as “humanity to others” or “I am who I am because of who we all are”.
By traveling on the momentum of one another and sharing a common direction and sense of community, we can get to where we are going more easily. It is possible to have a world view that is community-oriented and by doing so it becomes mutually beneficial. By serving others, you are serving yourself.
We must all challenge our own beliefs and share a mutual view of humanity so that we can build a better world.
John Lennon said it beautifully in his song Imagine…
“Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one.”
